Glass ionomer cements because of its features are considered very important in the child's dental materials. The relatively undemanding and simple technique of labour in almost all situations ensures maximum favorable clinical outcome. The glass ionomer cements are water based cements, known as polyalkenoate cements. Their generic name is based on the reaction between fluoroaluminosilicate glass and polyalkenoic acid, and occurs as a consequence of acid/base reaction between the components. Тhese cement have unique properties such as biocompatibility, adhesion to moist tooth structure, coefficient of thermal axpansion similar to the tooth structure and anticariogenic action, due to F-release. The conventional glass ionomer cements, however, present certain limitations, in order their physical properties. Recently, an entirely new category of glass ionomer cement restorative materials has been introduced-nano ionomer. Nanotechnology, also known as molecular nanotechnology has been introduced in dental field providing a cosmetically acceptable restoration with excellent mechanical properties. It is a new technical development that combines the benefits of a resin-modified glass ionomer with bonded nano-filler technology. Тhe inclusion of nano-particles in the powder of glass ionomer cement leading to their wider distribution, they occupy the empty space between the ionomer particles and glass powder particles acting as a reinforcement material composed of glass ionomer cement, which results in better mechanical properties (dimensional stability, high wear resistance, high cohesive strenght and resistance to fracture, the simple polishing).
